Cesar Peixoto has been questioned for not appointing a permanent captain at Wolves, with five players having worn the armband so far this season.

Wolves boss Cesar Peixoto has been told to name a permanent captain after five players have worn the armband in the first six games of the season.

It was a hectic summer transfer window for Wolves, who had an overhaul of the squad following their relegation to the Championship, even if it may not have been to the extent that many fans wanted.

Bringing in leaders was among the priorities for the recruitment team, so supporters were delighted to see Raul Jimenez and Kieran Trippier join the club.

The latter had captained Newcastle during a very successful period for the club, and whilst Trippier was a new signing, many expected him to take the role at Molineux as well.

Yet, Peixoto has previously said that he didn’t want to name one captain, as he instead has gone with a leadership group that consists of ‘four or five players’.

And, since the game against Port Vale in the EFL Cup, Wolves have had five different captains, with Trippier, Jimenez, Andre, Toti Gomes and Jose Sa all wearing the armband at certain points.

Obviously, that’s unusual in the English game, and, when asked by FLW about whether it’s the right approach by Peixoto, Wolves fan pundit Thomas Woodhall admitted he would like the boss to name a club captain.

“Yeah, I think you have to choose one captain," Thomas told FLW.

“It’s great that we’ve got a leadership team and a group of players that can all take responsibility, but I think it’s important to have a club captain, a main man.

“All the best teams have a captain that leads the charge, and I’m not saying we’re in that ballpark but it shows the importance of it.

“For me, the obvious one is Trippier, but if you give it to him, you could be giving it to someone else in a year or two, and we ideally need a bit of longevity.

"So maybe Andre or Ladislav Krejci, someone who could be here for the next three to five years, which will depend on what division we’re in. But, we do need one captain.”

This is a risky approach from Peixoto, although you would presume he has buy-in from the players within the leadership group, who are all senior figures in the team.

In truth, a combination of injuries, form, and doubts over the future of some of the players meant the captaincy was going to change regularly in the last month, but, with a more settled squad now, it will be interesting to see what Peixoto does.

Most would agree that Trippier seems the obvious choice, but it’s crucial that there are big characters in every dressing room, who are all pulling in the same direction.

So far, Wolves seem to have got that, and the way the subs celebrated with Raul Jimenez after his last-minute winner at Sheffield United gave the impression of a tight-knit group.

Of course, things can change quickly, and whilst some fans would rather a permanent captain was in place, the only thing that matters is that the players support the boss’ decision.

Yet, one concern will be the size of Wolves’ squad, and it could be difficult for Peixoto to keep everyone happy, as the reality is that some senior figures may not even make the matchday squad when players are fit.

It’s at times like that when the dressing room will be tested, and Peixoto will be relying on those leaders to keep the group focused and together in those periods, which will be crucial if Wanderers are to bounce back to the top flight at the first attempt.
