CF Montreal have bolstered their backline with the signing of full-back Aaron Herrera in a trade with Real Salt Lake.

The Canadian side have paid RSL $500k in General Allocation Money (GAM) split over the next two seasons, a 2023 international roster spot, and their first-round pick in the MLS SuperDraft for Herrera's services.

Should a certain future transfer figure be met, RSL will also receive a sell-on percentage.

“We are very pleased with Aaron’s arrival at the club. He is a player who will contribute with his quality on the field, but also with his experience in the league,” CF Montreal vice president and chief sporting officer Olivier Renard said in a club press release. “He can play a variety of positions, both as a central defender in a three-man backline and on the flanks, on the right and on the left.

“We had contacted Real Salt Lake in the past to acquire him, but without success. We are very happy that this transaction is now taking place.”

Now 25 years old, Herrera originally signed for RSL as a homegrown back in 2017, going on to make 124 MLS regular season appearances for the club, scoring once and providing 19 assists.

Herrera - RSL's second defensive addition this summer alongside center-back George Campbell from Atlanta United - is capped once for the United States Men's National Team after representing the Stars and Stripes at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, but is considering a switch to Guatemala.
