Championship clubs have been consulted on a scaled-back VAR system for next season, and the matter is considered closed for the foreseeable future, according to ExpressAndStar.com.
The EFL had explored Football Video Support, which requires fewer resources and would have allowed each coach two reviews per game. It was proposed to start in August after a presentation by the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO) at the EFL’s annual meeting last month.
After the EFL’s consultation, clubs were strongly against any form of in-game review system. A return to the idea within a year is viewed as unlikely.
VAR has been used in the Premier League for a number of years and remains contentious. In recent years Wolves sought to scrap it, but clubs voted against the move after Wolves found themselves on the wrong side of a string of decisions.
Calls for VAR in the Championship have persisted, with Norwich boss Philippe Clement pushing for it following a penalty incident in their match against Ipswich. Former Bristol City manager Gerhard Struber has argued VAR decisions are fairer.
Goal-line technology will remain in the Championship. A cost analysis will inform a June vote on whether to extend it to League One.
