Former Beninese footballer Razak Omotoyossi has died this Tuesday at the age of 39. The news has sent shockwaves through Benin.

Beninese football is in mourning this Tuesday following the loss of one of its former stars. At 39, after a career packed with experiences, Razak Omotoyossi passed away on Tuesday, August 19, in Lagos, Nigeria.

According to French journalist Jonathan Vaucher from Moselle TV, last month the player lost his home in a devastating fire, then suffered the loss of his sister, before making a final video appearance, visibly weakened, appealing to the people of Benin for help. On social media, countless fans, former teammates, and several of his previous clubs have paid tribute and sent messages of support to his loved ones.

His former club, FC Metz, also sent a message: "The club wishes to express its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones."

Born on April 26, 1985, in Lagos, Nigeria, Razak Omotoyossi later chose to represent the Benin national team. He scored 21 goals in 47 appearances between 2004 and 2016, becoming the second top scorer in the country's history. During his club career, Omotoyossi played in Benin, Albania, and Turkey. He also wore the jerseys of Al-Nassr, FC Sheriff Tiraspol (Moldova), Zamalek FC (Egypt), and FC Metz.
