Chelsea have confirmed that Levi Colwill is set for an extended spell on the sidelines with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Colwill suffered the injury in training this week and has now ‘undergone successful surgery’.
It’s a huge blow to Chelsea and the centre-back, who is expected to miss the majority of the 2025/26 season as a result. Colwill also faces an uphill battle to make the England squad for next summer’s World Cup.
Last season, Colwill started 35 league games for Chelsea as the club secured Champions League qualification.
Chelsea confirmed the news in an official statement and said medical assessments deemed surgery the correct course of action.
“Defender Levi Colwill has today undergone successful surgery to an anterior cruciate ligament injury,” the statement read.
“The 22-year-old had reported back to Cobham for pre-season at the start of this week, before unfortunately sustaining the injury in training.
“Medical assessments confirmed surgery would be the required course of action.
“Levi will now begin his recovery and be supported by the club’s medical department at Cobham during his rehabilitation phase.”
With Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile also sidelined through injury, Chelsea could hand a lifeline to Renato Veiga as a left-sided centre-back. The defender has returned from a loan spell at Juventus, having departed in January amid a desire for a prominent central role.
New signing Jorrel Hato is also an option to replace Colwill, despite featuring predominantly at left-back for Ajax last season. Hato could make his first appearance in tonight’s friendly against Bayer Leverkusen,
