The England international is considered one of the finest midfielders in the Premier League. His ability to pick decisive and progressive passes is one of his attributes.

Wharton has played huge roles in Palace’s recent success, helping them win the FA Cup and UEFA Conference League.

He is now open to leaving the Eagles, two years after joining from Blackburn Rovers. The south London outfit want £80 million for the Blackburn-born midfielder.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool have also been linked with Wharton, but are currently focused on other targets, potentially giving Chelsea an advantage.

However, the Blues are unlikely to make a move for the 22-year-old until the future of vice-captain Enzo Fernandez is sorted.

Fernandez has not hidden his intention to leave the club this summer. Real Madrid are interested in him, but Chelsea are demanding at least £120m for the Argentine.

The proceeds from Fernandez’s sale could be used to fund a move for Wharton or other similar targets.

Manager Xabi Alonso believes he already has a strong squad, but signing players such as Wharton would strengthen them further.

Chelsea are also keenly interested in Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers, but he is prioritising a move to Arsenal.

The club are also looking to strengthen at left-back following Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid, while a goalkeeper, centre-back, and left-winger are also being considered.
