Chelsea have been left light in midfield after injuries to Romeo Lavia and Enzo Fernandez, and they could be forced to enter the market for midfield reinforcement.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Blues are considering a swoop for former Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz.
The Brazilian joined Juventus last summer but has struggled to break into Thiago Motta’s side.
Chelsea could bring him back to the Premier League on loan as they look to shore up their engine room, but they are not alone in the race for his signature.
Manchester City are also in dire need of midfield reinforcements and have Luiz in their sights, setting the stage for a transfer battle between the two Premier League giants.
Luiz lit up the Premier League during his five years at Villa, becoming an important squad member and playing a crucial role as they qualified for the 2024/25 Champions League.
The 26-year-old registered nine goals and created ten big chances in the Premier League last term. He could do a massive job for Chelsea or City in this remaining part of the season.
However, Juventus don’t plan on loaning Luiz and would rather sell him permanently to recoup funds.
This gives Chelsea an advantage over City. The Bianconeri are interested in Renato Veiga, and the Blues could work Luiz into a package deal.
