Blues face tough challenge as European heavyweights collide in Champions League at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea and Barcelona clash in a huge Champions League showdown on Tuesday night.

OneFootball Videos

It is a first meeting between the two European giants since 2018, when the Blues were ousted 4-1 on aggregate in the last 16 thanks largely to the efforts of one Lionel Messi.

Chelsea head into the high-profile tie sitting 12th in the 36-team league table, having needed a second-half equaliser from Alejandro Garnacho to avoid losing to Qarabag in a 2-2 draw in Azerbaijan earlier this month.

The Blues, up to second in the Premier League after Saturday’s 2-0 win at Burnley, had previously hammered Ajax and edged past Jose Mourinho’s Benfica after opening their campaign on the continent with a 3-1 loss at Bayern Munich.

They face another tough test against a Barcelona side who trail rivals Real Madrid by a point in the LaLiga title race after notching three successive wins since their Clasico defeat last month, brushing aside Athletic Club 4-0 at the weekend in their first game back at the renovated Camp Nou since May 2023.

Barcelona have the same record as Chelsea in the Champions League this season and sit one spot above them only by virtue of a slightly superior goal difference, having beaten Newcastle and thrashed Olympiacos but also lost to holders Paris Saint-Germain and needed to fight back three times in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Club Brugge last time out.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Chelsea vs Barcelona is scheduled for an 8pm GMT kick-off on Tuesday November 25, 2025.

The match will take place at Stamford Bridge in west London.

Chelsea vs Barcelona team news

Chelsea remain without Cole Palmer, whose imminent return from a persistent groin injury that has bothered him all season was delayed after he fractured the little toe on his left foot after stubbing a door in a freak accident at home last week.

Enzo Maresca confirmed on Monday that Palmer was back training with a specially adapted boot and “feeling good”, though won’t play against Barcelona and remains a doubt for Sunday’s showdown with Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Romeo Lavia, Levi Colwill and Dario Essugo are also still sidelined for Chelsea, who saw Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto and Benoit Badiashile passed fit ahead of the Burnley game.

Back in action: Marcus Rashford will make the trip to Stamford Bridge having shaken off a bout of flu

Moises Caicedo and Estevao Willian will both be pushing to return to the starting lineup after being left on the bench at Turf Moor.

Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford is included in Barcelona’s travelling squad having resumed training in the aftermath of a bout of flu that forced him to miss the win over Athletic Club.

Raphinha and goalkeeper Joan Garcia both returned in that game, while Alejandro Balde went off at half-time as a precaution but does make the trip.

The visit to Chelsea comes too soon for Pedri, with Gavi and Marc-Andre ter Stegen remaining long-term absentees.

Chelsea vs Barcelona prediction

These two sides are separated by goal difference only in the Champions League and both now sit second in their respective domestic leagues, albeit with Barcelona having amassed eight more points having played one game extra.

Both teams have been curiously inconsistent in Europe so far despite their encouraging starts at home, needing to work hard earlier this month to avoid shock defeats by Qarabag and Brugge.

We anticipate a tense and cagey affair on Tuesday that likely ends all square.

Draw, 1-1.
