Chelsea are in quite the quandary in their goalkeeping situation, with one keeper who is not quite good enough and another who is not quite experienced enough.

Chelsea have a very interesting situation in goal this summer, and our writer Simon Phillips has been writing about it on his Substack.
To sum up the situation right now: Chelsea have Robert Sanchez as first choice, and everyone knows he’s not the answer long term. Then there’s Mike Penders, the youngster who was on loan at Strasbourg. He could be the answer long term – but isn’t ready yet.
Backup Filip Jorgensen has asked to leave. So what do Chelsea do?
If we sell Jorgensen, Penders will end up sitting on the bench for most of the year. That will stunt his development. But equally we need someone to put more pressure on Sanchez. If he has another shocking spell, we need someone good enough to replace him.
But buying a top goalkeeper will also block Penders’ development. Phillips makes it clear that Sanchez doesn’t want to compete to be first choice, either.
Sanchez’s stats from the season show he was pretty solid – which makes the decision over what to do with him this summer even more difficult.
In other interesting stats from the season, Joao Pedro did very well in one crucial attacking area – and we’re backing him to do even better next year.
