Erick Pulgar remains absent from Chile’s squad despite strong form at Flamengo. According to Coluna Do Fla, the midfielder declined call-ups for friendlies against Canada, the United States and Mexico in North America during the next FIFA window, prompting ANFP president Pablo Milad to address the issue.
Milad, who leads Chile’s national federation, said he had spoken directly with Pulgar and that the player felt deeply hurt by criticism during his time with the national team.
He described Pulgar’s stance as a personal decision, adding that the Flamengo player was unhappy with how he and his family had been treated.
Speaking at a sponsor event on Tuesday, 15 September, Milad said he respected Pulgar’s choice and that the midfielder had been affected by media scrutiny and parts of the fanbase. He added that Pulgar had always been committed to doing his best for Chile, and noted the player had posted a message on social media earlier in the week.
With Pulgar available, Flamengo face Independiente del Valle on Thursday, 17 September, in the Copa Libertadores quarter-final second leg at the Maracanã, kick-off 21:30 Brasília time.
