According to Sunderland Echo, Chris Coleman has emerged as a candidate for the vacant Leicester City head coach role. Leicester are assessing options following the departure of their previous manager.
Coleman is understood to be well known to Leicester’s ownership due to his former role at OH Leuven, the Belgian club within the same multi-club structure. That connection is thought to aid his inclusion on an early longlist.
His managerial career spans more than 500 senior matches across England, Spain, Greece, Cyprus, China and Belgium. His standout achievement came with Wales, as he led the national team to the Euro 2016 semi-finals. He has also held posts at Fulham, Real Sociedad, Coventry City, Sunderland, Hebei China Fortune, Atromitos, AEL Limassol, OH Leuven and most recently Asteras Tripolis.
He took charge at Sunderland on 19 November 2017 with the Championship side in the relegation zone after Simon Grayson’s dismissal. His first game was a 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa, though results initially steadied as 11 points were collected from the final eight league matches of 2017.
Momentum faded in January when Coleman was told by then-owner Ellis Short that no further funds would be available as the club was being prepared for sale, restricting recruitment to loans and free transfers. Several short-term arrivals followed but form slumped into a nine-game winless run, before a 4-1 win at Derby County that proved his final victory.
Relegation to League One was sealed by a 2-1 home defeat to Burton Albion. Coleman was dismissed shortly after the sale completed, following a final 2-1 loss at Fulham, leaving a record of 29 matches, five wins, eight draws and 16 defeats.
