EFL podcaster Tom Garratt believes that Chris Davies will be sacked by Birmingham by the end of September

EFL podcaster Tom Garratt has predicted that Birmingham City boss Chris Davies will be sacked by the first international break in the recent episode of The Pyramid Podcast.

The Blues kicked off their campaign with a rather dull 0-0 draw at Bramall Lane against Sheffield United.

Chances were few and far between. Patrick Bamford went closest, but that was just one of three shots that the Blades had all game. From a defensive standpoint, it was a good performance away from home, but it lacked that cutting edge going forward.

Only four teams had a worse away record last season than Birmingham, though, and there wasn't much from their opening away game to suggest that will change this year, something which will be paramount in their quest to break into the play-offs.

Speaking on new EFL show The Pyramid, podcaster Tom Garratt believes that the poor away form will ultimately lead to a bit of a middling start to the new campaign, and he doesn't think the higher-ups at St Andrew's will be as lenient with Chris Davies' job security.

Indeed, he believes that the Birmingham boss will be sacked by the time they travel to West Brom on October 10, following the extended international break.

"I'm telling you, he's not going to be here long," Garratt said. "Blues aren't good enough away from home, and I think the fans aren't happy with it, the ones I've spoken to.

"Sheffield United were poor, and if that's at home, they win it 3-0. That's where they're getting annoyed, frustrated, because why can't it translate?

"After we [West Brom] beat them, Davies is gone...in fact, we have them after the international break. He's gone then. You've heard it here first."

Garratt feels that the off-field business that the Blues have done in the last 12 months has been good, and has put them in a strong position to compete in the Championship.

While Davies had credit in the bank from the record-breaking campaign he led them on in his first season at the club in League One, that's starting to fade massively, and if Birmingham aren't competing, Tom Wagner and co will make a change.

Birmingham City's tough start to the 2026/27 campaign will put Chris Davies under pressure

It's not a hot take to think that Chris Davies will be under the most pressure out of his managerial peers due mainly to the overall ambition of the club. After all, he led Blues to their highest league finish in a decade last season, and it was seen as underwhelming.

If Birmingham aren't in a strong position by that international break, and the same goes for other teams, too, that three-week window presents a good opportunity for early changes to be made and new bosses to come in and stamp their authority on things.

So, Davies is under the magnifying glass, and his side have a really tough fixture list heading into that break, with home games against Bristol City, Southampton, Wolves and Middlesbrough and away outings to Wrexham, Norwich City and Derby County.

It's a ridiculously tough run of games, and one that will definitely reveal a lot about how serious this Blues side is about challenging for promotion.

Chris Davies could cement himself as the man for Birmingham City with a good run in the next month

Looking on the flip side, though, while a bad run could result in Davies losing his job, a good run in that seven-game stint could raise his stock back to near where it was towards the start of last season once more.

If Birmingham could bloody a few noses in battles against sides who finished in the top eight last season and are tipped to do it again this time round, they'll be able to showcase their promotion credentials ahead of what would then hopefully be a more favourable run on paper.

The away performances will be important here. Only three sides came away from St Andrew's with all three points last season. Coventry City were beaten there, Millwall were battered 4-0, and Ipswich Town were lucky to come away with a point on opening day.

So, the best teams can fall in Birmingham; the question is whether Blues can pick up the points needed away from home to maintain promotion form? If they can't, regardless of how difficult the away games seem to be, Chris Davies could be in a perilous position.
