Chris Sutton tells Callum McGregor he was ‘wrong’ over Martin O’Neill Celtic comparison | OneFootball

Chris Sutton has challenged Callum McGregor’s assessment of Martin O’Neill’s first Celtic team after another damaging derby defeat against Rangers.

Celtic’s difficult week went from bad to worse on Sunday as Rangers secured a 1-0 victory at Parkhead, inflicting a third defeat on O’Neill’s side in the space of seven days.

Sutton was scathing in his immediate assessment of the performance, suggesting his former club were fortunate to lose by only one goal.

The former Celtic striker has now picked up on comments made by McGregor before kick-off comparing the current side with the team O’Neill managed during his hugely successful first spell in Glasgow.

McGregor had described O’Neill’s Celtic side from 25 years ago as more direct, but Sutton believes that assessment missed the fundamental difference between the teams.

Writing on X, Sutton said: “Callum McGregor’s take pre game that Martin’s team 25 years ago were more direct missed the point and was wrong.

“We could adapt and adjust and work things out. We had a blend of physicality and creativity. Today’s team had neither and couldn’t adapt. That’s the difference.”
