The Blades will hope to address their dire start to the season post-international break

With Championship football returning this weekend, Sheffield United will be hoping to spark their season into life at Bramall Lane as they host Watford on Saturday afternoon.

The Blades' start to the second tier campaign has been discussed at length, as they currently foot the table after an accumulation of just three points from the first 27 available under Ruben Selles and Chris Wilder, who is yet to see a marked improvement from his side after returning to the club for a third time.

United oversaw a major squad overhaul during the summer, in which 14 new signings - the majority of which came in defence - were made, whilst they were able to retain the services of star performer Gustavo Hamer amid heavy transfer interest, as well as not many changes being made to the club's attack beside the expiration of Ben Brereton Diaz's loan switch from Southampton.

Unsurprisingly, a disastrous start to the campaign has also seen the South Yorkshire side net just three times in the opening nine league games and a further strike in the EFL Cup defeat at Birmingham in August, which saw Hamer score from the halfway line.

With the upcoming block of six encounters allowing Wilder to demonstrate an upsurge in performance levels, beginning with Saturday's clash against a Hornets side now led by the returning Javi Gracia, FLW asked our resident Blades fan pundit, Jimmy of the Blades Ramble YouTube channel - what change he hopes to see when the lineup is confirmed at 1:45PM.

Danny Ings' arrival after a successful trial period only added to the Championship experience within United's attacking ranks as he joined the likes of Tyrese Campbell and Tom Cannon - both of whom have struggled for form in recent weeks and months.

The 33-year-old is yet to start for the Blades since his summer arrival on a free transfer after being released by West Ham, but his 27-minute cameo in the 1-0 defeat at Hull City prior to the October international break certainly showed signs of what he can bring to the table if handed a starting berth in the coming weeks.

Wilder was complimentary of the three-time England international's impact, which did win a penalty after he was hacked down by Semi Ajayi, before Harrison Burrows subsequently saw the spot-kick saved by Ivor Pandur.

However, with the frontman now having two further weeks to get up to speed and settled, Jimmy believes a first start at Bramall Lane could help provide a catalyst to ending the Blades' attacking shortcomings.

"The problem Sheffield United have at the minute is creating chances," he explained to FLW. "A large part of that is not having enough bodies in the box when we're attacking.

"I would like to see us go two (strikers) up top, rather than one up top and two (attacking midfielders) in behind," Jimmy added.

"Chris Wilder, late in games - particularly when we've been behind - has gone to two strikers. I think, if Danny Ings has recovered, him and Tyrese Campbell up front with either Gus Hamer or Callum O'Hare behind him, would potentially be the catalyst we need just to ensure we've got bodies forward so, when we do break, and we do get into those good positions, we can take advantage of them by having bodies in the box.

"That's something I'd be keen to see," our fan pundit stated.

Sheffield United could benefit from system change at the start of Watford clash

As Jimmy alluded to, the aforementioned tactic has recently been deployed by Wilder in an attempt to salvage points in defeats to Charlton Athletic, Southampton and most recently, Hull.

The Blades did, unsurprisingly, dominate the ball in the latter stages in HU3 as a result, but there were several instances of missed chances or a lack of bodies inside key areas to latch onto balls into the box, albeit Ings was one of the better performers following his 63rd-minute introduction.

However, that doesn't take away from the fact United are currently ranked bottom of the division for shots on target per match and third bottom for the number of big chances created, which is a staggering thought when initially assessing the squad at Wilder's disposal on paper, regardless of a clear lack of confidence.

As such, bringing the experienced striker into the fold could help solve the aforementioned woes and lead to a potential first home win of the season.
