According to Marc Mechanoua, Celtic’s French defender Christopher Jullien (29) is headed to Germany to join Schalke 04 on loan. The deal includes an option to buy.
Having come through the Auxerre academy, the Frenchman found his feet in the 2012/13 edition of Ligue 2. The following summer, he was transferred to Bundesliga side Freiburg on a free transfer. After a loan to Dijon, the defender was bought by Toulouse, where he remained for three years, featuring heavily in their Ligue 1 side that escaped relegation in 2018.
Since joining Celtic for a fee of €8m in 2019, the Paris suburb native has acquired two Scottish league trophies, as well as the Scottish Cup and League Cup, completing the domestic treble in the 2019/20 season. These were the first trophies he added to his cabinet since winning the U20 World Cup with France in 2013.
Despite making a total of 47 appearances for the Scottish club in the 2019/20 season, Jullien has since fallen out of favour at Celtic, making just a single appearance, in the cup, this season.
The Frenchman is completing his medical this morning and, with his contract running out in June 2024, will extend with Celtic by a year before his loan to Germany.
