Clearlake Capital is close to a deal to acquire the Chelsea stakes of co-owners Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, The Guardian reports.

Boehly and Walter took control in 2022 after a joint takeover from Roman Abramovitch for just under three billion euros, and are now poised to step aside following months of strain.

The pair each hold nearly 13% of the club, as does Swiss investor Hansjörg Wyss, and, amid criticism over results in the English press, had been weighing exits for weeks.

Boehly, a long-time investment partner of Walter, is also expected to sell his stake.

Clearlake already owns 61.5% and runs Chelsea’s day-to-day operations under Behdad Eghbali. It had been due to appoint its own chair next year to replace Boehly.

The impending shift could influence Chelsea’s stadium plans, with Eghbali and Boehly at odds over whether to redevelop Stamford Bridge or pursue a new site elsewhere.
