Conmebol has appointed Argentine World Cup referee Yael Falcón for Cruzeiro v Flamengo in the Libertadores round of 16 first leg at Mineirão on Wednesday 12 August. Kick-off is 21:30 Brasília time.
According to Coluna Do Fla, despite being 37, Falcón has a substantial CV, having officiated FIFA tournaments including the World Cup, U-20 World Cup and Club World Cup, and 17 Libertadores matches since 2023. The outlet hopes he performs well and is not swayed by the home crowd, noting Argentine referees often let play run and Flamengo must be alert. He holds a degree in physical education.
He has taken charge of only one Flamengo match, Bolívar 1-0 Flamengo in La Paz on 22 August 2024 in the round of 16. Flamengo advanced after winning the first leg 2-0.
At the World Cup, which concluded last month in the United States, Mexico and Canada, he refereed Sweden 5-1 Tunisia, Czechia 0-3 Mexico and Switzerland 2-0 Algeria. Only the Switzerland tie was in the knockouts, in the second round, the others were group games.
His team features assistants Facundo Rodríguez and Pablo González, fourth official Carlos Gariano, VAR Hector Paletta and AVAR Lucas Novelli, all from Argentina.
The return is at Maracanã on Monday 19 August, with the winners to face Tolima (COL) or Del Valle (EQU) in the quarter-finals.
