CONMEBOL has broken its silence over FIFA’s aborted plan to sell World Cup stakes, welcoming the withdrawal of FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) and voicing concern at repeated unilateral actions by FIFA.

The South American confederation, the last to address the issue, said in a statement that leaders must prioritise dialogue, respect for rules and constructive exchanges, adding that football suffers when those principles are ignored.

Although president Alejandro Dominguez is seen as close to Gianni Infantino, the body appeared at odds with the FIFA leader’s recent approach. It noted that within days the sport shifted from global celebration of an extraordinary event to a public debate focused on governance.

CONMEBOL argued that the future of the game, and by extension FIFA, can only be built on respect for institutions, sound governance and democratic procedures.

The statement also referenced the next FIFA presidential election, scheduled for March 2027, with a candidacy deadline of 18 November 2026. It said the confederation will not support any action or procedure that departs from established institutional mechanisms, closing with the message that football comes first.
