According to Meu Timao, Corinthians used social media to champion women’s on-field achievements, aligning with Olympic athletes criticising a betting advert fronted by Sydney Sweeney.
The club shared images of players celebrating recent wins, centring on their run to the Brasileirão Feminino semi-finals. Captions stressed that this is what women in sport look like, and added a hope to keep being true to what they have built.
Sweeney appeared semi-nude in the commercial, covering herself with sports equipment. The spot drew complaints from athletes and sports bodies who said it sexualised women.
Among those speaking out were Briton Amy Hunt, American gymnast Gracie Kramer and Australia’s Ariarne Titmus, a four-time Olympic champion in swimming. Many posted videos highlighting their own performances in their arenas.
Sweeney has not addressed the criticism, though she did share images online of other athletes posing nude or wearing little.
Corinthians’ women face Bahia at 21:30 on Tuesday at Arena Fonte Nova, the first leg of the Brasileirão Feminino semi-finals.
