Corinthians have condemned homophobic abuse aimed at their players by Bahia supporters after a 1-0 win in Tuesday’s Brasileirão Feminino semi-final first leg at Arena Fonte Nova. The club published its statement on Wednesday morning.

The abuse occurred as the players were leaving the pitch in Salvador. Bahia Notícias reports that three Corinthians fans were attacked outside the away section by members of a Bahia organised supporters’ group, with punches, kicks and blows using helmets and traffic cones.

The club called the behaviour unacceptable, reiterating zero tolerance for homophobia on and off the pitch and a commitment to respect, diversity and a more inclusive sport. It expressed solidarity with the players targeted and urged a rigorous investigation and punishment by the authorities.

The night also brought a landmark for women’s football in Bahia, with 5,811 in attendance, including 5,578 paying spectators, the largest women’s crowd recorded in the state and a record for this Brasileirão Feminino campaign.

The tie concludes on Monday at 21:30 at Neo Química Arena. Holding the advantage from Salvador, Corinthians need a draw to reach the final.
