Corinthians have confirmed the return of José Martínez to CT Dr. Joaquim Grava for the 2026 season. The club said in a statement that the Venezuelan midfielder reported back on Saturday.
Martínez had not been at the facility this year, remaining absent for more than a month after work resumed on 3 January. He travelled to Venezuela in the off season to renew his passport, then was unable to leave amid border closures during the political crisis.
The delay caused discomfort within the football department. Executive Marcelo Paz had been unhappy with the slow passport process and indicated there was no timeframe for the player’s return, with the renewal prompted by a lack of pages in his previous document.
The situation also irritated the coaching staff, particularly Dorival Júnior. A recent attempt to contact the player was said to have gone unanswered.
Martínez remains part of the squad but must now fight for his place. He will miss Sunday’s derby, as he still needs to be registered in the Campeonato Paulista.
