Corinthians edge XV de Jaú, reach Copinha knockout stage

On the evening of this Friday (9th), Corinthians faced XV de Jaú, from the interior of São Paulo, at Estádio Zezinho Magalhães in Jaú, for the third and final round of the group stage of the 2026 São Paulo Junior Football Cup. In a lively match, Corinthians won 3-2, with goals scored by Luiz Fábio Favela, Pires, and Luiz Fernando.

Coach William Batista lined up the following team for the match: Matheus Corrêa; Pellegrin, Fernando Vera, Iago Machado, and Pires; Thomas Lisboa, Caraguá, and Luiz Eduardo; Luiz Fernando, Luiz Fábio Favela, and Rodrigão. The bench included Nikão, Lorenzo Corrêa, Robert, Nicolas Araújo, Nícollas, Pedro Thomas, Vitinho Dourado, Lucca Caramico, and Dodô as options.

Right-back João Vitor ‘Jacaré’, midfielder Luiz Gustavo Bahia, and playmaker Gui Amorim were unavailable, as they were called up by coach Dorival Júnior to join the professional team’s training sessions, aiming for the start of the 2026 Paulista Championship, next Sunday (11th).

XV de Jaú Lineup

The opposing team, coached by Bruno Santos, took the field with: Pedro Cipola; Igor, Thiago, Daniel, Dedé, Tchê Tchê, Juan, Conte, Saio, David, and Derick.

Refereeing

For the match, the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF) appointed Aparecido Pereira Bueno as the main referee. Raphael Martinasso Lima and Claudio Rafael Ribeiro were the assistants, while Fernando Bartz Guedes was the fourth official. This stage of the Copinha does not have VAR.

First Half

The first 15 minutes of the match between Corinthians and XV de Jaú were uneventful. Timão tried to break through on the flanks, especially with Pellegrin on the right, but without success.

The first goal for Corinthians: Despite a lackluster start, the Alvinegro managed to create a scoring opportunity and took advantage. At 17 minutes, after a cross into the box, the XV de Jaú defense got confused and the ball fell to Rodrigão, who set it up for Favela. The striker struck hard and opened the scoring.

The second goal for Corinthians: It didn't take long for the score to increase. At 21 minutes, Caraguá broke into the box on the right and crossed low. The ball went across the area and reached Pires on the other side, who hit it first time into the corner and found the net.

At 28 minutes, Caraguá skillfully beat his marker and shot first time from outside the box, but the shot was weak and Pedro Cipola caught it easily. At 29, after a corner kick, Fernando Vera won in the air and headed towards the corner, but the goalkeeper made a great save.

At 31 minutes, Dedê received the ball on the left and shot from outside the box, but the ball went too high and missed Matheus Corrêa’s goal.

The first goal for XV de Jaú: At 32, Dedê broke into the box on the left, beat Vera’s marking, and fired a rocket into the top corner, with no chance for Matheus, scoring a beautiful goal.

At 37 minutes, Luiz Eduardo took a dangerous free kick and the opposing goalkeeper had to stretch to reach the ball, sending it out for a corner.

The third goal for Corinthians: At 46, Pellegrin intercepted a pass in midfield, advanced, and played in Luiz Fernando inside the box, who slipped the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs to extend the lead for Timão.

There was no time for anything else and Corinthians went into halftime leading 3-1.

Second Half

Just like the first half, the second half started with few attacking chances for either team and a lot of physical battles in midfield. Only at 13 minutes did a dangerous chance arise, with Luiz Fernando almost scoring an Olympic goal for Corinthians, forcing the goalkeeper into a good save.

At 28 minutes, Pires lofted the ball into the box, Dourado rose unmarked and headed, but Pedro Cipola saved comfortably. At 33, Dodô picked up a loose ball at the edge of the box and tried his luck, but sent it over.

The second goal for XV de Jaú: At 34, Dedé won a challenge with Luiz Eduardo, who stretched his leg and committed a foul. From the spot, XV de Jaú’s number 7 himself shot into the top right corner, with no chance for Matheus Corrêa.

At 37, after a free kick into the box, the ball bounced around and the Corinthians defense had to work hard to clear it. At 41 minutes, after a corner from the left, Dodô won in the air, but his header was weak and the opposing goalkeeper made a two-step save.
