Osmar Stabile, the Corinthians president, says he and his family faced threats during talks to renew Memphis Depay’s contract, with private numbers leaked and weapons shown.
According to Globo.com, he said phone numbers for him and his daughters were exposed and bank accounts belonging to him, his daughters and his wife were accessed. He added that people showed a knife and a revolver, and that measures are being taken after WhatsApp threats from criminals.
Before the late U-turn that led to the renewal, protesters gathered at the gate of his São Paulo home. Banners called for his removal and for judicial intervention at Corinthians, signed by Pixadores da Fiel (PDF), and said peace at the club was over.
On Monday night, at Parque São Jorge, club councillors advised and approved a renewal for two more seasons. Soon after, Stabile confirmed he will sign the new deal with the Dutch forward.
Stabile stressed finances were paramount, saying he would not commit to terms the club could not afford in future. He said the contract is for two years and that he may not be in charge by then, adding it would have been easier to sign anything and leave.
Corinthians currently have three transfer bans, debts of more than R$ 2.7 billion, and are the subject of inquiries led by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
