Yuri Alberto went from penalty villain to goalscorer as Corinthians drew 1-1 with Santos at Vila Belmiro, while Hugo Souza’s mistake proved costly.

According to Globo.com, Dorival Júnior’s plan to crowd midfield worked, with the visitors the better side for much of the clássico.

Yuri Alberto won a penalty after a fine solo run, then missed from the spot, his fourth failure in five, before quickly hitting a well-taken goal. He ran tirelessly and unsettled Santos defenders.

Santos levelled from a Gabigol free-kick after a foul by Gustavo Henrique, a highly debatable decision. André Ramalho, fading late, had failed to cut out the pass that preceded the infringement.

The goalkeeper had enjoyed a quiet night but set his wall poorly and could not keep out Gabigol’s strike.

Matheuzinho provided an outlet and defended stoutly, though his set pieces disappointed. Matheus Bidu pushed high, his shot created the rebound for the goal and he was later denied by Gabriel Brazão.

Raniele split duties between midfield and defence. Breno Bidon’s tackle launched the move for the goal, André supported attacks, and Matheus Pereira impressed on his first start back. Carrillo worked hard then went off with groin discomfort, Garro’s season bow was low key and Gabriel Paulista barely featured.

Late changes failed to halt the counter that led to the free-kick, with Vitinho losing possession and Charles unable to break it up.
