Corinthians have reopened talks with Memphis Depay over a new deal after president Osmar Stabile reversed his 11 August decision to withdraw the proposal.

According to Globo.com, Depay asked to restart discussions, having grown attached to the club and reluctant to leave Brazil at this point.

The forward is open to easing payment terms, while the board want about R$ 30 million off a package valued at roughly R$ 157 million, which includes R$ 42 million owed from his previous contract.

The hierarchy are seeking guarantees from commercial partners to help fund the agreement. The marketing department considers the operation financially viable with backers already aligned to the renewal.

To advance the deal, Stabile has submitted figures and conditions to the Conselho de Orientação and is awaiting its opinion, which could also offer political cover after backlash to his earlier note.

Stabile did not travel to Argentina for the 0-0 draw at Rosario Central in Thursday’s Conmebol Libertadores last-16 first leg. After the match, coach Fernando Diniz said he felt sad and disappointed with how talks had unfolded, having regarded a renewal for Memphis as effectively certain.

News of the U-turn reached political groups at Parque São Jorge on Friday, angering allies. Some long-standing opponents of a renewal argue Stabile should have ended talks earlier, saying the drawn out saga damaged the club’s image.

Advisers involved in the negotiations also said they were not told a reversal was possible, adding to the discontent.
