This is the fourth meeting between the clubs. Corinthians have one win and two defeats, scoring six and conceding seven. The last clash on 9 May 2000 finished 3-2 to Corinthians, with Edilson and Luizão, twice, on target, before progress on penalties to the quarter-finals.

Corinthians are in the Libertadores round of 16 for the 14th time, with five qualifications and eight eliminations. Their most recent progression came in 2022, when they were later knocked out by Flamengo.

The return leg is at Neo Química Arena on 20 August at 21:30. If the aggregate score is level after both games, the tie will be decided on penalties.
