Corinthians vice-president Armando Mendonça has played down Memphis’s new track, although not named, comparing it to Garota de Ipanema and saying the forward will be judged on the pitch.
He told ESPN on Saturday that Corinthians had been given a song by a rapper hired to play football and that he would be held to that.
Released on Friday as Don't Panic, the video shows Parque São Jorge in flames and includes a line about a vice-president who is now his enemy. In December last year, days after the club’s fourth Copa do Brasil, Mendonça denied any rift with Memphis, who had criticised directors and councillors.
Mendonça said the club is bigger than anyone, and that as a director he would defend the institution and its staff regardless of approval.
The vice-president has faced protests from supporters since last year. In December he apologised to a fan after online arguments, and he is a defendant in São Paulo over alleged qualified and continued embezzlement, attempted qualified embezzlement, qualified theft by abuse of trust, and coercion during proceedings initiated by the state prosecutor.
Overnight, Memphis said the track was written four months ago and was only art. Having extended his contract until July 2028, he also called for a peaceful protest at Corinthians’ social headquarters on Saturday.
