Corinthians visit Coritiba on Sunday, a direct clash at Couto Pereira at 19:30 that could pull them towards the top.
According to Meu Timao, Fernando Diniz’s side start the 24th round ninth on 32 points, seven off the Libertadores places after last Sunday’s loss to Cruzeiro. With the three other Brazilian clubs alongside Corinthians in the Libertadores currently inside the G5, the league could hand down a sixth berth.
Victory, allied to favourable results elsewhere, would see them leapfrog Red Bull Bragantino on 32, Atlético-MG on 33 and Bahia on 34, currently sixth.
A draw would keep Corinthians ninth for now, although Botafogo could overtake them on Monday by beating Athletico Paranaense in Rio de Janeiro.
Coritiba sit 10th on 31 points and could also end the round as high as sixth with a win. Defeat in Paraná could drop Corinthians up to three places, with Coritiba, Botafogo and Vitória able to move above them, Vitória facing a derby against Bahia at Barradão.
Despite the stakes, Corinthians are likely to field a changed side after Thursday’s heroic qualification against Rosario Central in the Libertadores last 16. The Parque São Jorge club travelled to Curitiba without Matheus Bidu, Matheuzinho and Hugo Souza, with no reasons yet given by the club, plus suspended Rodrigo Garro and six others in the medical department.
