Lucas Chevalier’s form has sparked debate at Paris Saint-Germain, and whether inconsistency could erode his standing in the dressing room.
According to L'Équipe, he joined from Lille last summer for €55m including bonuses. He was decisive in the UEFA Super Cup on 13 August, a 2-2 draw then 4-3 on penalties against Tottenham, and in the Trophée des Champions on 8 January, 2-2 then 4-1 on penalties against Marseille. PSG then lost 1-2 at Sporting Portugal in the Champions League on Tuesday, sharpening scrutiny.
His arrival to replace the appreciated and influential Gianluigi Donnarumma prompted internal questions. Team-mates praised his distribution but felt he was less decisive on his line than Donnarumma, with no comparison drawn to Matveï Safonov.
Leaders such as Marquinhos have tried to ease his adaptation, in a group considered kinder than during the ‘Ibra’ era. Support is said to remain the default.
Ex-defender Jimmy Algerino accepts a disconnect could occur if he is not winning matches, yet argues the coach’s and club’s backing could shape how team-mates react.
Bernard Lama says defenders should not blame him, noting they faltered in Lisbon too. He sees a 23-year-old under pressure who needs time, not demands for instant world-class standards, recalling Donnarumma’s own bumpy path.
Patrick Colleter also doubts he will lose team-mates, urging reassurance during a rough spell and arguing responses depend on character.
Chevalier has appeared calm about reversing momentum and keeping his place despite Safonov’s return from injury. Building stronger daily bonds, alongside performances, could be key to making the fit work.
