Could Paul Pogba leave Monaco this summer?

Paul Pogba’s (33) first season at AS Monaco cannot be considered a success. It was difficult to imagine him hitting the heights of yesteryear, however, with just six appearances, one start, and 115 minutes accumulated, La Pioche fell below expectations.

His future is now in question, as per a report from Nice-MatinPogba signed a two-year deal last summer but, speaking mid-season, CEO Thiago Scuro suggested that the former France international may not see out that deal, alluding to potential discussions this summer, unless he accumulated more minutes, which, of course, he struggled to do.

Nice-Matin reports that Pogba’s knee regularly swells, which can also explain why he has suffered frequent muscular injuries this season. Those are linked to compensating for the knee issues.

Despite the issues, Pogba seemed to suggest that he would remain at Monaco next season, in a post on social media. Nice-Matin understands that that message surprised some at the club, with talks over the future yet to take place.

The midfielder’s recruitment was instigated by owner Dmitry Rybolovlev, rather than Scuro and it was also the owner that pushed for Pogba to start against FC Metz towards the end of the campaign. This element complicates talk around his future.

With Filipe Luis coming in, it is unclear what role Pogba would hypothetically have, what role he is capable of having, and whether he would accept such a role. His future on the Rocher is, therefore, uncertain.
