Coventry City have wrapped up the Championship title in emphatic fashion, dismantling Portsmouth 5-1 at the CBS Arena to officially secure top spot with two games still remaining.

Already promoted to the Premier League following last week’s 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers, Frank Lampard’s side have now added silverware to their achievement, completing a dominant season in the second tier.

The hosts set the tone early, with Haji Wright once again leading the line superbly. The US international opened the scoring in the 12th minute, taking his league tally to 17 and giving Coventry a platform they never looked like surrendering.

Portsmouth, down in 19th place, did threaten briefly before being put firmly in their place. After the break, Ephron Mason-Clark took centre stage, scoring twice in a controlled and confident second-half display from the home side.

Coventry’s control was further reflected when Regan Poole turned the ball into his own net, compounding Portsmouth’s difficulties and effectively ending the contest as a competitive affair. In added time, Kaine Kesler-Hayden added a fifth to put a gloss on the scoreline, while Adrian Segecic netted a consolation goal for the visitors.

The victory takes Coventry to 89 points, a total no other side can now reach, confirming them as Championship winners.

It brings the curtain down on a hugely impressive campaign for Lampard’s team, who have been near the summit for much of the season and now turn their attention to finishing strongly against Wrexham and Watford.
