Former Saints striker Ross Stewart is close to completing a move to Championship side Swansea City.

Stewart, 30, left Saints as a free agent at the end of last season after failing to agree terms on a new contract. He delivered his best campaign for the club, scoring 11 goals.

That haul included the opener in a 2-1 FA Cup win over Arsenal and an equaliser in the 2-1 Championship play-off semi-final victory against Middlesbrough. After two injury-hit years, Stewart and the medical staff managed his workload. He was then called up to Scotland’s World Cup squad, although he hardly featured in North America.

Saints head coach Tonda Eckert said: “I think that Ross has been brilliant. The only thing that we needed to sort as physically conditioned to play consecutive games.” He was speaking to Daily Echo.

“We figured out a good way to use him, and he hasn't played a single 90 minutes, for example, but there's no striker with a better goal ratio than him.”

“I'm still in touch with Ross.” “It's possible [that he could return]. We definitely need a second striker. I think that is very clear.”

Saints will now turn to alternative striker targets. The window closes at 11pm on September 1.
