Danny Cowley says the Carabao Cup first-round draw against Southampton made him smile, the former Portsmouth manager embracing the south coast rivalry backdrop. The tie doubles as both clubs’ competitive opener on Saturday.

According to Daily Echo, the League Two side will host Saints.

“I did smile when we got drawn against Southampton,” Cowley said. “Having lived in Portsmouth before, I know that rivalry pretty well.”

He called it an exciting fixture and said Southampton are probably the highest ranked team at this stage. He added that facing such opponents offers instant feedback and a chance for younger players to show their level.

Former Portsmouth defender Sean Raggett joined Colchester from Rotherham United earlier this summer. “To start off with a tie against Southampton is going to be a big challenge but one everyone is really looking forward to,” he said.

He noted he arrived at Pompey after Saints’ 4-0 win at Fratton Park, and said he might hear jeers from the away end. Raggett added the occasion offers valuable exposure for Colchester United and the senior group alike.

The match is on Sky Sports, with kick-off at 5.30pm. Southampton have sold out their allocation of 1,500 tickets.
