Former Sunderland and Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon has retired from football at 43. The Hearts academy graduate ends a 24-year career that brought 84 caps, six league titles, four Scottish Cups and European football.

The player said in a post on Instagram that he had lived his dreams and was grateful to team-mates, coaches, opponents, medical staff, loved ones and fans. He added that the gloves were finally off as he bid farewell to his playing career.

Gordon’s career was punctuated by injuries, yet his resilience matched his quality. He came through at Hearts, moved to Sunderland and then Celtic, before returning to Tynecastle in 2020.

Reflecting on his journey, he spoke of walking out at Tynecastle to the Gorgie roar and of victories that delivered Edinburgh bragging rights and silverware. He said sharing those moments with supporters made them special.

Internationally, Gordon earned 84 caps and relished facing leading opponents on major stages. He said singing the national anthem became a cherished ritual.

He was part of Scotland’s squad at this summer’s World Cup finals, but did not feature. Nottingham Forest’s Angus Gunn started all three games.
