Damion Downs’ German goal revives a familiar Southampton hope | OneFootball

Southampton’s 1-0 win at Braunschweig on 24 July was settled by Damion Downs, a forward many had stopped counting on. He took Lewis Dobbin’s pass before half time, rounded the keeper and scored.

Signed from Cologne for £7m, Downs endured a first season without a league goal and a goalless loan at Hamburger SV. According to Sainstmarching.com, this felt more than a friendly footnote, hinting at why the club paid the fee.

There is precedent for patience. James Beattie joined from Blackburn Rovers in July 1998 as part of the Kevin Davies deal, and scored five in year one. After injuries, he hit 23 league goals in 2002/03, taking Saints to a first FA Cup final in 27 years and earning an England cap that February.

The echo is not exact. Beattie cost roughly a quarter of Downs, and that same £7m once took Davies out of the door, while Downs is yet to score in the league. What links them is patience and a clean slate under Tonda Eckert, much as Gordon Strachan’s arrival in 2001 helped unlock Beattie.

The context now is tougher. Southampton begin 2026/27 in the Championship with a four-point deduction after the Spygate expulsion from May’s play-off final, and promotion is the aim. With Cyle Larin leading the line and no striker signed despite a summer of chasing, a goal from within eases the search for now, and if Downs grows into the finisher Cologne once had, it could save a fee.
