Danny Rohl has no Rangers chance under Kevin Thelwell

As Ibrox Noise discussed recently, Rangers’ Euro exploits worsened as the club hit a new record of losses. Seven in fact. Kevin Thelwell’s Rohl influence is too big.

A tonne of this blame sits at the feet of Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell who has overseen the last two transfer windows and the last two managerial appointments.

Russell Martin

Russell Martin was he and Patrick Stewart’s call, and Danny Rohl is the same.

We bear no ill against Rohl – he knew he was out of his depth at Rangers, and withdrew.

It was only when Thelwell came back later with a big wage and severance package that Rohl agreed to take the job.

It’s hard to say no when big cash is waved at you, and all you have to do is follow orders.

It’s why Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat walked away. Two alpha managers who didn’t like Kevin Thelwell’s Rangers model. Or Patrick Stewart’s for that matter.

Rohl

Rohl is a nice guy, and he’d love to be a success, but he’s a lame duck manager who doesn’t pick the team because he’s not allowed to. He took over a basket case in Sheffield Wednesday and he’s done the same here. Notice a pattern?

He is, let’s not forget, 36, and not an experienced manager. He will do the best he can with his hands as tied as they are but what he can do has a roof on it.

Kevin Thelwell calls the shots. He mostly tells Rohl who he can pick but leaves the formation up to him.

Rohl has no freedom at Rangers to manage the club, so he’s already kind of doomed. But with the wage, he accepts that, and will do what he can.

Choice

Don’t forget Rohl walked away, and got very testy at his unveiling when challenged on that. He wasn’t first choice. Nor was he even fourth. He was a backup manager. And walked away when he realised how many were ahead of him.

They all said no to Thelwell regardless of wage. But Rangers have bought Rohl as a yes man.

We know many fans go with the ‘give him a chance’ notion but it’s a bit redundant. He has no chance under this setup and knew it from the beginning.

Players

The players like him and play for him, but the man above still influences selections, which makes it messy

And do we see the owners fixing that any time soon? No, we really don’t.

We can’t see any light at the end of this tunnel as long as Thelwell is around. Kevin Thelwell’s Rohl influence is too big.
