Investigation: Rangers have deliberately wasted £5M on a £300,000 player

As Ibrox Noise alluded to earlier, the signing of Emmanuel Fernandez from Peterborough remains arguably the most staggering piece of business Rangers did this summer. Forget Chermiti as much as a waste of £10 million, as the Portuguese has been, the signing of Fernandes is genuinely alarming.

A staggering transfer

Posh fans, aka Peterborough, were absolutely stunned and praising chairman Barry Fry to the hilt when he managed to get around £5 million for the defender. That defender had been a complete fail at League 1 Posh and was worth a market value of around £300,000. Rangers casually went in there, spent around £5 million on him and brought him to Scotland. There is absolutely no justification for that signature.

A player who vanished

This player was never a candidate for a Rangers shirt. He has only played, as far as we can recall, once in a single competitive match and has disappeared entirely from the first team scene. He cost that King’s Ransom for zero return. This was an obvious boss job. There was no evidence whatsoever that this guy had what it took to be a Rangers player. He was a League 1 fail. He couldn’t even get a half decent match for Peterborough.

A disaster of spending

He was a terrible choice to sign, even at his market value. The fact that he’s disappeared completely from the front lines tells a massive story in itself. He is not part of the Rangers team at all. We discussed earlier on Ibrox Noise the genuine tale of Rangers wasting money and why that might be. We cannot and will not accuse anybody because we’re sure the 49ers aren’t doing anything like that, of course.

But this is a staggering waste of money. £5 million on a player who doesn’t play and who was obviously never worth it in the first place. It was almost like Rangers simply targeted any player they could for a low value and threw a high market sum at the club in question. There was unquestionably something weird going on there. Yes, weird.

Pattern of poor choices

The same weirdness we see with Chermiti, the £10 million wasted on him as well. Let’s not forget Aasgaard either. Their Norwegian international, who’s about as Norwegian as a Scouser quite frankly because he’s English, has been an absolute fail as well at Rangers. One great goal admittedly, but aside from that, the former Luton man looks like a League 1 player.

This is the calibre that Rangers brought in. But it’s that curious tale of Fernandes, his disappearance entirely from the front lines, not that he was ever really in them. Rangers threw £5 million at this three-figure value player, six-figure value player. It is a disaster. A complete and utter waste of cash, which does beg the question that we posed earlier. This has to be deliberate by the 49ers Enterprises, by Cavenagh. This is what he wants. Why? You’d have to ask him.
