Ibrox Noise Investigates: why are Rangers’ 49ers wasting SO much money on rubbish?

Ibrox Noise, like many fans these days, have a few questions for Rangers. Many are aiming their sights at Kevin Thelwell, but Ibrox Noise has reason to believe Rangers’ current state is as much down to the owners as anything else. Rangers are wasting money and we’d like to know why.

Fans cannot understand why Thelwell and CEO Patrick Stewart remain in post, but even more worryingly, why the club invested £35M (or £45M according to Thelwell) in garbage this summer.

Fees

£5M was acceptable on a prime Finnish winger in Oliver Antman, and admittedly there was no choice on the £4.5M on Oscar Cortes, but after that it gets very seedy.

£10M on two League One nothings in Thelo Aasgards and Emmanuel Fernandez, £10M on an Everton reject in Youssef Chermiti. That all adds up to around £30M off the bat on a clutch of players who have been clearly wastes of money.

Which is where our suspicions come in.

Are Rangers’ owners, the 49ers Enterprises, DELIBERATELY signing dross players based on the price? There is something of a conspiracy among some Rangers fans that the money spent is a racket, a tax scheme. We can’t comment on that.

Waste

But it’s pretty clear to any Rangers fan without eyes painted on that £20M was utterly thrown away, while £3M on Gassama wasn’t exactly well-spent either. Add the atrocious Joe Rothwell to this and Rangers basically brought in a whole host of expensive rubbish that has made the squad worse.

And it appears to be deliberate.

It is looking more and more like this dreadful strategy is part of a plan – that Kevin Thelwell is in fact not just powerful at Rangers, but the owners want this. They want him signing garbage at premium prices, players who are unjustified.

The conspiracy, that we’re not going to accuse anyone of, would be throwing cash away to keep the accountant and tax man happy. Doing it above board to launder money. We would never ever accuse the 49ers of this.

Worth

But it is concerning for Rangers fans that so many terrible players have been signed for fees way above market worth.

The case of Fernandez remains flabbergasting. £5M on a player worth £300,000. We’ll have more on that later.

The club is deeply in the mire, and there appears no light at the end of the tunnel.

In the last 24 hours we’ve learned Rangers want another £10M waste – a Genk defender with a fairly uninspired career behind him. This isn’t a mistake, it’s quite deliberate. Rangers are wasting money.

Because this is how the owners want it.
