David Bruce is closing in on the appointment of long-serving Sunderland figure Oscar Chamberlain as Sheffield Wednesday continue their off-field rebuild.

Sunderland Echo understands Chamberlain has left his post at the Stadium of Light and is edging towards a move to Hillsborough, where he would reunite with Bruce following his own switch earlier this year.

Bruce became Wednesday’s chief executive after a takeover by American consortium Arise Capital Partners, and he is helping spearhead a reset after years of instability under former chairman Dejphon Chansiri.

Chamberlain spent 12 years at Sunderland, leading branding, digital, marketing and communications, with parts of the supporter-facing output earning awards. His expected move is into a newly created role, not a direct replacement for long-serving head of communications Trevor Braithwait, who remains in post.

The hire forms part of plans to strengthen Wednesday’s senior structure under Arise Capital Partners, with further appointments anticipated to modernise the club’s infrastructure. The Owls are also expected to confirm former Sunderland and Stockport County figure Simon Wilson as sporting director, and he is believed to have begun outline work on recruitment and contracts.

For Sunderland, Chamberlain’s exit marks another off-field change after a historic seventh-placed Premier League finish and Europa League qualification. Ian Taylor, formerly of Burnley, has been installed as interim head of communications, with a permanent role now being advertised.
