David Bruce is closing in on recruiting long-serving Sunderland figure Oscar Chamberlain to Sheffield Wednesday as the club's off-field rebuild continues, according to Sunderland Echo.
Chamberlain has left his post at the Stadium of Light and is nearing a switch to Hillsborough, where he would reunite with Bruce following his own move from Wearside.
Bruce, formerly Sunderland's chief operating officer, left earlier this year to become Wednesday's chief executive after the takeover by American consortium Arise Capital Partners. He is now helping to lead a major reset at Hillsborough after years of instability under former chairman Dejphon Chansiri.
Chamberlain spent 12 years with the Black Cats, working across branding, digital, marketing and communications. He led supporter-facing projects, with some of that output earning awards.
His expected role in Sheffield is understood to be newly created and slightly different, rather than a direct replacement for long-serving head of communications Trevor Braithwait, who remains in post. Further senior hires are planned as Wednesday strengthen their structure.
Preparing for League One, Wednesday are also expected to confirm former Sunderland and Stockport County figure Simon Wilson as sporting director. He is believed to have carried out outline duties during early transfer and contract discussions as a busy summer looms.
For Sunderland, Chamberlain's exit is another significant backroom change after a historic seventh-placed Premier League finish and Europa League qualification. Ian Taylor, formerly of Burnley, has been named interim head of communications, with a full-time appointment being advertised.
