Chelsea have opted against making Jadon Sancho’s stay a permanent one after failing to agree terms and the player will return to Manchester United, at least temporarily.
Sancho joined Chelsea on loan last summer after it became clear the forward could not repair his relationship with now-sacked manager Erik ten Hag.
The deal between United and Chelsea included an obligation for the latter to permanently sign Sancho at the end of the 2024/25 campaign for £25million.
However, a few months ago, it emerged that Chelsea could break the agreement by paying United a £5m fee.
Sancho made 41 appearances across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing twice as many assists. He helped Chelsea finish in fourth place in the Premier League table and win the Europa Conference League, even scoring in the final against Real Betis.
Although the England international had a few bright spells at Stamford Bridge, he never quite set the world alight, and questions about his future were a constant theme.
A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Chelsea wanted to keep Sancho but on significantly reduced wages.
Now, David Ornstein of The Athletic has given an update, indicating that Sancho will leave Chelsea.
“Jadon Sancho is leaving Chelsea when his contract ends on June 30 after an agreement could not be reached over personal terms for the winger’s loan move to become permanent.”
Ornstein confirms that Chelsea will indeed pay United a £5million penalty charge.
This has been reiterated by Matt Law of The Telegraph who wrote on X, “Worth noting that Chelsea did not pay an initial loan fee for Sancho. So the £5m to send him back is only the same as Villa paying £5m to loan Disasi or Juventus paying £5m to take Veiga on loan.”
“Chelsea made an attempt to sign Sancho permanently but terms with the player could not be agreed. 15 goal contributions not spectacular but not bad.”
According to Fabrizio Romano, Sancho still has no future at United and will be made available for transfer.
“Jadon Sancho, not expected to stay at Manchester United this summer. He’s included in list of players available for sale to generate funds and reinvest on different signings.”
“Sancho’s camp will assess options in the upcoming days/weeks.”
Sancho has made 83 appearances for United.
