Like Michael Olise, centre-back Dayot Upamecano and goalkeeper Mike Maignan, already leaders under Didier Deschamps, answered the call in Zinédine Zidane’s first France camp, according to L'Équipe.

At the Stade de France on Friday, the crowd chose acclaim, chanting “Upa! Upa!” in the 85th minute of France-Italy, a match that finished 1-1.

Upamecano was leaving the pitch with his head down after a second booking, which left France 10 against 11.

The ovation probably did him good and reflected a knowledgeable public saluting a gladiator’s exit.

Maignan’s presence also underlined continuity, his leadership evident during the new coach’s first gathering.
