Callum Lang put Preston North End ahead in the ninth minute with a close-range finish, setting the platform for a 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers.
Lang's opener came from Delano Burgzorg's pass, the forward ghosting into the six-yard area to guide his effort past Aynsley Pears with minimum fuss.
He then doubled the advantage with a close-range header from Jordan Thompson's set piece cross (27.). The timing of his run again separated him from his marker, making a difficult finish look straightforward.
The striker's efficiency told throughout the first half. He registered two attempts, both on target, and won possession three times, including twice in the attacking third, underpinning Preston's front foot start. He also completed his only tackle before being withdrawn near the hour (59.).
Lang thrived because Preston found him early and often between defenders, allowing him to attack the near post and the six-yard line. Those movements repeatedly unsettled Blackburn Rovers and handed Preston control of the game's key phases.
Preston visit Watford next in the Championship, while Blackburn Rovers host Sheffield United.
