There is a lot of optimism at Pride Park after a promising season under John Eustace last time out, even if it ended in disappointment as the Rams missed out on a top six place on the final day.

However, there’s no doubt that the club are making progress under Eustace, and, with the new play-off format extending to eight teams, Derby will believe that promotion is a possibility.

Derby County confirm they have sold all away tickets for Charlton game

That feel-good factor has been reflected in the ticket sales for their first game of the season, with Derby making the trip to London to take on Charlton at The Valley.

That is an impressive number, particularly as the game is over a week away, and the travelling support will no doubt make themselves heard against the Addicks.

It is a ground that will bring happy memories for Derby fans, as they picked up three points when the two sides met in the capital back in January, with Bobby Clark scoring what turned out to be the decisive goal in a 2-1 win for Eustace’s side.

The midfielder, who was on loan at the Rams at the time, has since joined Derby on a long-term deal, so the game at Charlton is likely to be his first as a permanent player.

Derby County supporters can play a big role in their promotion push this season

Some Derby fans may be frustrated at how the window has played out so far, as whilst they have done some good business, including Clark and Sammie Szmodics, it’s clear that more additions are required to help the squad.

Obviously, the situation is complicated by the possibility of fresh investment by Turki Alalshikh, which would change the dynamic at Pride Park completely, so you can understand why they are waiting to see what happens.

But, no matter how it plays out, it’s clear the Derby fans and players are united right now, and Eustace must try to tap into that to help the team this season.

There are always big crowds for home games, where the fans can make a good noise, and the supporters also travel in big numbers on the road.

All players will tell you that those on the terraces can make a big difference, and, if the Derby players perform and give their all, they know they will get a response from the fans.

So, after a bleak period where the future of the football club was in doubt, it’s good to see that there is a more positive outlook at Derby right now, and a win at Charlton on the opening day of the Championship season would be the perfect start to what the Rams will hope is a memorable year as they dream of a Premier League return.
