Wrexham are interested in Ipswich Town attacking midfielder Anis Mehmeti, who is also a target for Derby County.

Wrexham have joined Derby County in showing an interest in Ipswich Town attacking midfielder Anis Mehmeti ahead of the transfer deadline.

The 25-year-old joined the Tractor Boys in January from Bristol City, and he played his part in helping Kieran McKenna’s men reach the Premier League as they finished second in the Championship on the final day.

However, with Gary O’Neil now in charge at Portman Road, and the likes of Julio Enciso, Daizen Maeda and Abdul Fatawu all signing for Ipswich in the summer, Mehmeti has fierce competition for his place.

As a result, he wasn’t in Ipswich’s matchday squad for the opening day win over Sunderland, and there has been plenty of talk over Mehmeti’s future.

It has been claimed that Derby are tracking the Albanian international, but the Daily Mail has confirmed that Wrexham are also monitoring the player.

They state that Mehmeti is a target for Phil Parkinson’s side, with the Welsh side expected to be active in the final week of the window.

It’s not clear what sort of deal this would be, but Ipswich would likely want to at least recoup the £3.5m they paid the Robins for Mehmeti just a matter of months ago.

It’s easy to see why Championship clubs are tracking Mehmeti, as he was a very good player at Ashton Gate over the years, so he is proven quality at this level.

From Wrexham’s perspective, he would also bring something different to the team, and the performances in the first two games suggest that’s exactly what they need.

With Josh Windass out injured, the Red Dragons have lacked that creative spark, as they failed to make their dominance count at Cardiff when they conceded a late equaliser.

It was a different story against Watford, where Wrexham couldn’t get a winner against the Hornets defence despite having more of the ball, so Mehmeti would be a big help.

He can chip in with goals, and he has an eye for a pass and an unpredictability that would give Wrexham more creativity in attack.

It’s a similar story for Derby, who also need a player in that mould, and it wouldn’t be a huge shock if other clubs at this level are keeping tabs on Mehmeti.

Anis Mehmeti could flourish in Wrexham’s setup

From Mehmeti’s perspective, the project of Wrexham is surely going to appeal, as they are a club on the rise, and there will be an expectation that they can challenge for promotion.

So, having seemingly fallen out of favour at Portman Road, Mehmeti will know that the best route for him back to the Premier League would be to join a club like Wrexham.

As well as that, he should be ideally suited to Parkinson’s system. With the ex-Bradford boss opting for a back three, the width comes from the wing-backs, so Mehmeti will be allowed to play as an inside forward off the target man.

That will give him the freedom to find spaces in the final third, and that is where Mehmeti is at his best.

Therefore, this looks like a move that makes sense for all parties, and it would be a shrewd addition for Wrexham if they can get it over the line.
