Hayden Matthews levelled when he diverted into his own net (45.).

After the restart, Portsmouth lost Murphy to injury and turned to Harvey Blair. The Rams pushed on with Andreas Weimann and Lars-Jorgen Salvesen introduced from the bench.

Nicolas Schmid was outstanding, tipping over Weimann's rising strike (90.) and clawing away Patrick Agyemang's header in the third minute of second half stoppage time.

There were brief treatment breaks after a couple of knocks early in the second half, and three minutes were indicated at the end of each half.

Derby registered 12 attempts, six on target. Portsmouth produced four attempts and tested the goalkeeper once. Derby also edged possession with 51.9%.

Next, Derby visit Birmingham. Portsmouth host Queens Park Rangers.
