DFB debut in front of a home crowd? Klopp sends a clear message to Urbig | OneFootball

Jonas Urbig appears to be on the verge of making his debut for the German national team. The FC Bayern goalkeeper is expected to make his first start for the DFB squad in Thursday evening’s Nations League match against Serbia in Munich.

There has been no official confirmation from national team coach Jürgen Klopp as of yet. However, one key indication suggests that the 23-year-old will be given the nod: Urbig will join Klopp at the final press conference ahead of the match on Wednesday evening.

In the past, this has usually been a clear sign that a player would start for the national team. This pattern has held true under Klopp as well.

Urbig is set to make his DFB debut

Before Klopp’s debut in the 1-1 draw against the Netherlands, Marc-André ter Stegen sat on the podium alongside the national team coach and subsequently started the match. Before the 0-1 loss to Greece, Jonathan Tah attended the press conference—and also started.

Now there are strong indications that Urbig will get his chance against Serbia. Although Klopp has declared Ter Stegen the number one “for the moment,” the national team coach is rotating his lineup heavily during the current international break. Most recently, Alexander Nübel was in goal.

Urbig is considered one of the options for the future on the DFB team. In addition to the Bayern pro, Finn Dahmen and Noah Atubolu are also currently part of the squad. Both are still waiting for their first appearance for the German senior national team.

For Urbig, the debut would be special: The Bayern goalkeeper could make his international debut at the Munich Arena of all places—and thus in front of a home crowd.

Karl is also set to make his comeback

Numerous changes are expected against Serbia, and not just in goal. Following the lineup switch, Klopp is expected to field a nearly completely revamped starting lineup from his so-called “second squad.”

Other players could also make their debuts. Said El Mala is expected to get a chance to play, as is Vitaly Janelt.

From Bayern’s perspective, Lennart Karl is also likely to take center stage. The teenager missed the World Cup due to a last-minute injury and is now set to make his comeback in the DFB jersey against Serbia.

This means the Nations League match in Munich could be a special experience for two Bayern youngsters: Urbig is set to make his first senior international appearance, while Karl is poised to return to the national team.
