DFB-Pokal: Leipzig supporter loses life
A dark day for German football. As RB Leipzig faced Energie Cottbus in the DFB-Pokal, tragedy struck in the stands even before kickoff.
A club supporter collapsed at the entrance to the stadium. Despite the swift response of emergency services, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. This heartbreaking news was only relayed to the teams at halftime.
On the pitch, Leipzig were already leading 3-0 thanks to Johan Bakayoko and a brace from Christoph Baumgartner. But when the players learned what had happened, the stadium fell into a heavy silence. RB Leipzig promptly released an emotional statement:
We are deeply saddened to learn that one of our supporters lost their life after a medical emergency. Our thoughts are with his family. In moments like these, football takes a back seat.
A minute's silence was observed before play resumed. The club secured their place in the round of 16 with a 4-1 victory, but the match will forever be remembered for the supporter who never made it home.
