Díaz is in a slump: Kompany explains what the Bayern star is lacking | OneFootball

Luis Díaz was one of FC Bayern’s top performers last season. Currently, however, things aren’t going quite as smoothly for the Colombian in front of the opponent’s goal. The 29-year-old continues to create good scoring opportunities on a regular basis, but he’s missing a striking number of them.

Even in the 0-0 draw against FC Schalke 04, Díaz lacked the necessary precision in crucial moments. Even in the 5-0 Champions League victory over Bodø/Glimt, the winger could have found the back of the net. While his fellow attackers were responsible for the flurry of goals after halftime, Díaz failed to score himself.

For Vincent Kompany, however, this is no cause for concern. The Bayern coach does not see a fundamental performance issue with his star attacker. Rather, what matters most is that Díaz continues to demonstrate the intensity and presence that set him apart.

“The only thing missing is the finish. His energy is there, and he’s a constant threat,” Kompany explained at the press conference ahead of the Bundesliga match against SV Elversberg.

“You have to create those chances in the first place.”

For the Belgian, what’s particularly important is how consistently Díaz gets into dangerous scoring positions in the first place. The winger gives it his all, constantly looks to get behind the defense, and causes problems for opposing back lines with his runs.

“You have to get into those scoring opportunities in the first place. You have to make those runs into space time and time again,” Kompany emphasized.

That’s exactly why the Bayern coach doesn’t want to overestimate the team’s current finishing. Díaz continues to get into situations where he can score goals. Right now, however, that final bit of luck is often missing.

“Right now, he sometimes finds himself in those situations where, in the end, a bit of luck is missing. The shot gets deflected, or another player scores instead,” explained the 40-year-old.

Above all, Kompany is calling for patience

From the Bayern coach’s perspective, the solution to this current phase sounds correspondingly simple: Díaz shouldn’t change his game and should remain patient in front of the goal.

„The important thing is that he gets the chances, and he needs to stay calm; then the success in front of the goal will return,“ Kompany clarified.

The Belgian clearly doesn’t want to hear anything about a classic slump. After all, Díaz continues to deliver the elements that are crucial to Munich’s offensive play. It’s just that his efficiency has slipped recently.

It’s nevertheless hardly surprising that the discussion surrounding his finishing has intensified recently. After his strong performance last season, expectations for Díaz are correspondingly high. Added to this is the fact that, due to a lack of a classic alternative on the left wing, the Colombian has seen plenty of playing time so far.

Kompany therefore seems primarily concerned with not putting any additional pressure on him. As long as Díaz continues to play with high intensity, make his runs into the box, and regularly create opportunities for himself, the Bayern coach sees no reason to make any fundamental changes.

Now the 29-year-old just needs to break his scoring drought. From Kompany’s perspective, it’s merely a matter of time.
