Diaz remains Bayern’s problem child—but now there’s hope | OneFootball

Luis Díaz continues to struggle with his form at FC Bayern. The Colombian was again lackluster against Union—now the break comes at just the right time.

In the 7-0 win over Union Berlin, FC Bayern’s offense was in scoring form. Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala, and Harry Kane put on a great show. Only Luis Díaz was once again unable to keep pace with his teammates.

The 29-year-old did try hard and even found the back of the net in the first half. However, the goal was disallowed due to an offside call. Beyond that, the Colombian made little of an impact on offense.

In the FCBinside individual player ratings, Díaz received a grade of 4. What’s particularly noticeable right now is that the winger lacks his usual explosiveness and impact.

This has been a recurring issue over several games. Even in the 5-0 Champions League win against Bodo/Glimt, Díaz failed to contribute to any goals. In the subsequent 2-1 victory over Elversberg, he squandered a big chance shortly after coming on as a substitute.

Particularly unfortunate: After a pass from Michael Olise, Díaz could have taken the shot himself or laid it off to the unmarked Kane. Instead, he opted for a complicated backheel attempt and failed.

Díaz is now getting his much-needed rest

Max Eberl came to the offensive star’s defense after the match. “As a defender who’s never scored a goal, what am I supposed to tell Lucho Díaz about how to score better? Lucho isn’t in the right rhythm right now. He’s probably thinking: ‘Should I take it right away, or should I take another touch?’ By then, the ball’s already there. But as I said: We missed a few chances today. Eventually, he’ll break out of his slump,” explained the Bayern sporting director.

Vincent Kompany had also recently emphasized that he was generally satisfied with the Colombian’s play: “It’s all about the finish. His energy consistently creates danger. You have to earn those chances first, and he does that time and again with his deep runs and his activity.”

After the Union match, there’s now another reason for hope. While numerous Bayern stars are heading off to join their national teams, Díaz is staying in Munich. The 29-year-old wasn’t called up for Colombia’s upcoming international matches.

For Díaz, this could come at the perfect time. After an intense start to the season, he’ll have several weeks to recharge physically while continuing to work on his rhythm in training.

At the same time, the growing competition in Bayern’s offense is ramping up the pressure. Musiala is back, Serge Gnabry made his comeback against Union, and Ismael Saibari scored his first competitive goal for FC Bayern after coming off the bench.

Díaz needs to step up his game after the break. The conditions for doing so, however, could hardly be better: While many of his competitors are away on international duty, Bayern’s current problem child is getting exactly what could help him the most right now—time and peace of mind.
